Advanced Pottery 2018
Casting
Title: Round the Track
Course: Advanced Pottery
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mrs. Gollan
Subject Matter: slip casting mold, cast
Medium: Slip casting material
Project Goal: Learn how to create a tile you could design for mass production and earn money from.
Personal Review/Evaluation and Critique: I enjoyed this project because it was cool to see something you made make something else. The part about this track tile that I like the most is the lines. They are precise giving it good balance between each lane. The texture of the piece is all very deep or very risen portions of the tile. The wings have lines carved out and the foot is raised above the tile. Perhaps my favorite part is the colors. The lanes are painted red/black every other one and the colors of the letters are the same as the rest of the color scheme. I only used 3 colors of paint on the whole piece, but they work together nicely. The part on the tile that pops out the most to me due to its color and how it is on top of the tile, is the runner shoe. All of this adds beautiful emphasis to top off the track and field tile.
What did you like or dislike about this project?
I did not like how long it took to get the casting done. It took a lot of time, but they turned out really cool.
What areas need improvement? What are your strengths and weakness for this project or technique used for this project? I feel like there is a way to make your tile smoother. Mine came out with some rough edges and some sharp parts I had to sand off before painting. My strengths were in building a good sturdy mold with prominent features to create more pieces!
If you could do this project again what would you do differently? If I could do this project again I would do the track differently on my mold. It is weird to me to have every other lane indented and protruding. It seems like it’s not a track anymore.
Any additional thought about the process or the project?
I really liked how easy it was to make multiple projects from this. I still need to paint them but then I can give them as gifts to my coaches.

Mishima
Title: Carving Night and Day
Course: Advanced pottery
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mrs. Gollan
Subject Matter: the sun and moon
Medium: clay, wax resist, glaze
Project Goal: Create a mishima piece using separate layers of glaze
Personal Review/Evaluation and Critique: This project was one of my favorite ones even though it was the hardest. I love how it came out and I am stoked to see it finally glazed. One element that the mishima displayed well is line. after putting glaze on the first time I carved out defiant lines to be filled with other glaze colors. The glazes that I picked out display variety. I used many different colors of glaze to display the different parts. The color also shows emphasis on the inside. The outside is all colors while the inside of the bowl is just black and white. The piece shows a good use of space. On opposite sides the bowl is filled with the design of the sun and the moon. It does not leave very much open space with nothing else there, I think there is just the right amount of designs on the bowl. One element I did not enjoy, but it is there, is shape. The bowl is shaped in a odd way because it was not even on the wheel. It is slightly lopsided with one side a little taller than the other or slightly thicker. I still love the piece and this was a super cool project!
What did you like or dislike about this project? I did not like how it was very hard for all of us to get the size bowl the project was supposed to be. I really like how you can add color to just the lines of the project. They should look prominent and stand out more.
What areas need improvement? I could use a little more practice on the wheel. I had a hard time centering large pieces of clay along with pulling the sides up.
What are your strengths and weakness for this project or technique used for this project? My weakness was making a good evenly shaped bowl. It’s a little lopsided, but it was the best large bowl I could make. My strength was when I glazed it afterward. I am excited to see it all done and fired.
If you could do this project again what would you do differently? If I did it again, I would wait until I got a larger, more even bowl then make my designs on it and finish with glaze.
Any additional thought about the process or the project? I really liked the glazing process, but the wax resist scared me. I hope it did not ruin any of my other glaze on there first glaze I put on.

Melting Pot
Title: Melting Tea Cup
Course: Advanced Pottery
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mrs. Gollan
Subject Matter: a melting piece
Medium: clay and glaze
Project Goal: I learned how to pull clay out from a piece by squeezing it between my thumbs and adding more on until it looks like it is melting. Along with using glaze to continue the affect
Personal Review/Evaluation and Critique: This project was a very interesting one. At first I did not really know what I was doing, then I got on the wheel and just started making small cup shapes. The shape of the project did come out really cool. One side is very normal while the other side looks like it started melting and is wavy with not very much form involved. I just pulled the slay until it got to the table and then added a puddle. It looks as though it has movement. The portion that is "melting" looks like it should still be melting and continue to pool up on the table below. The glaze on the cup shows pattern. The cup has many small designs all over it that make a pattern. the last thing I see in this piece is texture. The melting portion looks like it should be wet and smooth as it flows to the table. All in all, very fun project!
What did you like or dislike about this project: I really liked how the piece looks. It came out a little different than I planned, but the "melting" portion looks cooler how it is pooling than it did when it was just flopping over.
What areas need improvement? I think I need to work on making clay thicker. I always make portions of my project very thin and they break. The puddle broke off from the cup before I even fired it.
If you could do this project again what would you do differently? If I had to do this again I would make the puddle larger and include the tea cup plate in the melting process. I think it would look cooler with more going on.
Any additional thought about the process or the project? This is a really cool way to show what pottery can do. It is almost like an illusion. I cant wait to have this sitting on my dresser!

Extruder Project
Title: what did you name your project
Course: Advanced Pottery
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mrs. Gollan
Subject Matter: What/Who is the art of?
Medium: Clay, glaze
Project Goal: What is the main technique/concept you learned?
Personal Review/Evaluation and Critique: This project was a fun one that I took at a little bit of a different perspective. Instead of making a sculpture that I can just look at I made a functional piece to plant things and keep stuff in the center. This project showed space really well. The two small boxes are for plants and they can be placed anywhere around it. That changes it up and adds variety. Since there is only two of the small boxes it also adds balance to the piece. If it was only one box it would look weird. The part of the box that you keep things in that I really liked was the emphasis on the hinges. They are sticking out a lot and giving it very prominent shape.
What did you like or dislike about this project? The only thing that I truly disliked about this project was how little time I had to do it. I had to rush through it, which made it a little sloppy.
What areas need improvement? What are your strengths and weakness for this project or technique used for this project? I think I could have spent more time on welding the walls together to make them look cleaner. I think my strength in this project was making a functional piece and a sculpture out of one project. I loved this project I am super excited to plant things in the small boxes and put things inside of the box!
If you could do this project again what would you do differently? If I could do this project again I would add more little planter boxes and build them up on top of each other in a zig zag way. This was my original intention but I was not able to follow through with it.
Any additional thought about the process or the project? This was a fun project it makes us think about different ways to create sculptures.
