Mr. Salyers Drawing and Painting Class Fall 2017
Title: Coral Jade
Course: Drawing and Painting
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mr. Salyers
Subject Matter: Myself
Medium: Drawing Pencils
Project Goal: Draw a photo of myself
For this project we were required to draw a self portrait. Right off the bat I knew I was not going to like this project; I do not like to look at myself in general, so drawing myself was a sure struggle. As I predicted I struggled through this project and there are some things that I did not like, but also some things I think I did well.
When I look at this the thing that stands out to me is my shirt. I think I used value and shape well here. For value I shaded the different parts darker or lighter shades to also show texture in the shirt. Shape was shown well by the folding and curves of the shirt being accurately represented in the letters and droop of the neck. I think the project was supposed to focus on yourself and instead mine has an emphasis on the shirt because of the contrast between the lightness of my body and the darkness of the shirt. I should have made my body stand out a little more by shading it darker colors. I also do not think I got my proportions correct. My head seems a little large and too close to my body making me look as though I have no neck.
All in all I did not like the self portrait part of this project, but it is interesting to see how drawing yourself can differ from drawing someone else like in the practice sketches we did before this project. I think if I redid the project I would choose a different picture of myself that does not contrast so much with my shirt and maybe make it look like I have a neck.

Title: Free as the Waves
Course: Drawing and Painting
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mr. Salyers
Subject Matter: Wrap drawing
Medium: Drawing Pencils
Project Goal: Show an animal by drawing it using "wraps"
This project had an interesting task in store. Draw a 3D looking animal by using the appearance of wraps. I could tell this would be a fun project and it did turn out to be one of my favorite ones!
The thing that stands out to me the most in this drawing is the value. In all of the wraps there is a weaving effect that happens and it is emphasized by the shading that is darker near the other wraps and lighter near the middle of them. This also creates a great sense of form. The way that the wraps are woven show the form of the turtle very well. I used a variety of different sized wraps to show the different parts of the turtle. The shell has very large wraps and tiny wraps while the body is made of medium sized wraps. Different parts of the turtle show different textures. The under shell of the turtle looks smooth and firm while the wraps look bumpy and hollow. I think all of this helps add to the sense of movement. The way that the turtle is positioned makes it look like it is swimming across the page in an ocean of wrap sea creatures.
I loved the fact that we were using a different way of drawing an animal to show the shape and feel an animal gives off. If it had been a lion it may have been sharper and harder lines, but doing a turtle it represents a more carefree character. I think that I could have drawn the head and body a little better. The shading is a little messed up on both and the head stands out since it is very light compared to the rest of the drawing. It took me a long time to learn how to correctly draw and shade the weaving wraps, but after I caught on it was easy to finish the project. If I were to do this project over I think the only thing I would do differently is the non wrap part with the head and body. I would shade and define them a little more, really bringing him to life!

Title: Eye Colored by Water
Course: Drawing and Painting
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mr. Salyers
Subject Matter: Experimental Water Color
Medium: Water Color
Project Goal: Practice different ways of water color painting
At the beginning of this project I had a really hard time brainstorming what to do. I had a general idea of what I wanted in the center of my page, but I was worried about doing so many sections and coming up with ideas for all of them. In the end I decided to risk it and I am very glad I did because I was extremely pleased with the outcome!
The immediate element that stands out to me in this painting is color. I used the basic warm and cold color scheme, but I think the way I laid out which color scheme went where helped pull the piece together. There is a balance of colors, 4 warm and 4 cold, all in places directly opposite of the other. If the warm colors were in random places I don't think the painting would have much balance at all. The element of line is also used very well here. The lines coming from the eyes to the outside of the paper are blank and I think that helps emphasize the colors, making them seem to pop out of the page. By putting these white lines where they are they show space. The different portions of the painting all work together in a way that establishes different parts (like the eye) being above or outside the other sections in the piece.
I really enjoyed this project and I could not have guessed at the beginning that the final piece would turn out like it did. If I could change anything about the project I would have blended the colors together better in the warm colored section. I had trouble getting the reds, oranges and yellows to flow together. This project taught me about all the different techniques that can be used to create a beautiful water color painting.

Title: Morph to Melt Mommy's Heart
Course: Drawing and Painting
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mr. Salyers
Subject Matter: Morph Drawing
Medium: Drawing/Colored pencils
Project Goal: Morph one object into something unrelated
At the start of this project I knew I would be making this for my mom. I had the idea right away to use a dragonfly as the starting point, but I struggled to come up with something a dragonfly could turn into. After much thought the lighthouse popped into my head.
I really like the finally product of this art piece because it emphasizes a few different elements and principles. The first element that I like is the color. At the beginning of the morph the dragonfly is mostly gray with a bit of red in its wings. As it moves through its morph the red becomes more overbearing and yellow quickly came into the morph also. By the end, red and yellow are the main colors, taking out all the gray. Especially in the 3rd and 4th morph image there is a lot of value. The body of the dragonfly starts reflecting light in the way the lighthouse does in the last one. The shading on both of them shows great value. In every drawing in the morph there is a repetition of the color red. From the beginning, until the end red is repeated through the whole process. The use of colors and gradual morph of the dragonfly into the lighthouse shows the unity between the two objects. At the beginning you would not think a dragonfly can be a lighthouse, but by the end it is easy to tie the two together. When I look at all the drawings together I think there is an emphasis on the wings/light. In the beginning the wings are the biggest part of the dragonfly and at the end they turn into the brightest part of the lighthouse.
I really enjoyed this project. I liked to think all the way through it that I was making this for my mom and it gave the project something special for me to focus on. If I could redo the project I think I would choose to do the whole thing in colored pencil instead of using drawing pencils and colored pencils. The drawing pencils smudge a lot so it was hard to get a clean end piece. I think I would also choose to put it on different colored background paper. The different white colors look gross to me.

Title: A Master Plumbers Piece
Course: Drawing and Painting
Artist: Coral Perfetto
Teacher: Mr. Salyers
Subject Matter: Recycling project
Medium: Acrylic Paint
Project Goal: Take an old painting and recycle it into your own
Similar to the piece before this one it was special to me. I could not just make one of my parents a project, I had to make one for both! This project and its punny name was inspired by my dad. He is a master plumber and this project is a "master piece".
When you take a first look at this painting I think the first thing that stands out is the background. There are a few interesting things about the background. The first thing is the color. I chose colors that contrasted, but worked well with each other. The purple and green contrast like the blue and orange, but all the colors look well together. Another thing I notice about the background is the pattern. The entire thing is made up of similar shaped triangles and the colors are spread around not touching each other making a type of pattern. One more thing that can be noticed is proportion. The triangles are all similar in size, some are smaller and some are bigger but they are all proportionately similar to each other. Moving away from the background I come to the wrench. Something I intentionally did with the wrench was add texture. The background was very smooth and ridged, but this is nothing like a plumber. The wrench is bumpy and a bit mishapen. The paint on the wrench is not applied smoothly so it really stands out compared to the background. I think the last thing that jumps out to me is variety. There are only a few different colors in this painting, but the way they all pop out gives it a feeling of variety. There is also a variety of ideas going on with the strict background and easy foreground.
I loved this project, but it was a pain in my butt. The painter before me could not finish the project and I can tell why. Painting all of the triangles neatly took forever. This is one of the main reasons I was so far behind in the class. I think if I could change anything about the project I would not have spent so much time doing the small triangles and I would do bigger ones in the background instead. That said I would not change it now that I am done because all the little triangles and colors look really cool!
